Banquitas is the name that refers to the little benches in a riverbank park used for generations by courting couples and for simply relaxing on warm evenings.
Banquitas House of Culture was built in the mid 1980's to serve as a public market but was converted to a House of Culture in September 2000. There's still a green area with an amphitheatre for outdoor performances.
The Banquitas House of Culture's objective is to help preserve, identify and document the local traditions of the northern region of Belize which include Orange Walk and Corozal districts along with rural villages and communities. Another objective is to collect old and contemporary traditions, beliefs and folklore of the people of northern Belize.Together with Museum of Belize, Banquitas has the objective to function as a space for on-going cultural and artistic promotion, conservation and training. Our continuous mission is to raise the level of appreciation for the arts across many communities by participating, assisting and supporting other artists, cultural groups, schools & educational centers, village councils as well as create strong ties with other local and international cultural institutes that aid us in training, workshops and cultural exchanges.
