Art is in the eye of the beholder, whether your taste buds prefer contemporary, abstract or the classics. For Gayla, art is not only a medium to showcase beauty, but, it is also an escape format to express emotions and to escape reality for that moment when brush meets canvas.
Gayla or Gayls as her friends and relatives affectionately call her was born in Belize City, Belize in the year 1970. She has produced many works in her youth; from sketches to her version of 'The Last Supper' painted for Our Lady of the Way Roman Catholic Church 2010.These works were on display at art gallery in the Bliss during summer of 2009.
From a very young age, Gayla has been involve in the field of arts. She started drawing in primary school and even if her accomplishments were stick figures she would be proud as it was her way of expressing whatever it was she felt at that moment. She has also taught art classes to others from ages 6 to 42 years.Throughout high school and college she painted and improved her skills along the way. Today she is very proud of her undertakings.
She would like to think that her paintings are not your everyday typical pieces of art. Experienced in mostly acrylic paintings, her works have led her to both demanding schedules and moments where she can sit, relax and engulf herself in painting. She loves painting in vibrant colours, giving life and texture to her characters. Now you may wonder why almost all are paintings of women. This carries a twofold meaningful: One being that they represent an aspect of her personality and two; women are beautiful and need to be showcase as stronger, independent figures.
It is her hope to continue producing more paintings in the near future and improve her abilities as time passes. In Gayla’s words; “Keep in mind that no matter whatever field of art you venture into, be true to it, work hard at it, express yourself through it and you’re sure to have beautiful pieces completed."
Gayla's work will be on display at the Belisle Art Gallery staring Feb 3rd through to the 28th, 2011.
