Much of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR)'s focus is on research activities. ISCR has the responsibility of developing conditions and guidelines for cultural research to be carried out in Belize and Under the NICH Act Chapter 331, is required to review and approve all proposed research involving humans that is conducted in Belize. Approval is required regardless of funding status or sponsorship and product (book, thesis, video or audio material).

Once a research permit is granted the Institute for Social and Cultural Research is also responsible for supervising the anthropological and sociological research conducted by foreigners in the country and for creating a database of the information derived that would make such information accessible to Belizeans.

ISCR staff also carries out primary research, train researchers and write grant applications. Since the Institute necessarily conducts its own research it also sources funding for local Belizeans to get involved in cultural research.
