RESEARCH COMPETITION 2011
The Institute of Social and Cultural Research is proud to announce its Second Annual Research Competition based on the theme:
“Social Cohesion in Belize’s Multi-Cultural Context Since Independence”
The competition was designed as an educational forum through which undergraduate students would be able to develop their analytical skills through research, and subsequently make a public presentation of their research findings.
The ISCR Research Competition has the following goals:
• To provide students the opportunity to conduct research on some relevant social, cultural or historical theme and subsequently, to share their research findings.
• To give students the opportunity to network with other participants, to share ideas, gain new insights, and familiarize themselves with prominent persons in the field of social science, culture, history and research.
• To provide detailed feedback to students about their research and presentation of findings.
• to recognize and reward outstanding students
The competition was open to all tertiary institutions in Belize. Each institution was to submit up to two proposals. Students had the option of submitting the proposal as a group of no more than three persons. The proposals were received by the Institute for Social and Cultural Research and were vetted by a panel of judges based on a set of pre-determined criteria. The best four proposals were selected based on the quality of the work that was submitted as well as the novelty of the idea that was being proposed with respect to the topic of the research competition.
The four proposals that were chosen will present their findings at the Bliss Center For the Performing Arts On May 5th at 10:00 a.m. In addition, each will be given a grant of $300 to help offset some of the costs associated with conducting and completing the research. Of the four, the top three research group(s) will receive prizes of a laptop and printer , as well as monetary prizes amounting to $500, and $300, for first, second and third places respectively. All participants will also receive an award certificate.
The teacher or lecturer who facilitates the student(s) who emerge as the winner of the competition will also be given a cash prize of $300 dollars.
